Australian Open

I've been watching the Australian Open Tennis non-stop. It's a lot like zoning out, but good lessons to be learned. I love the commentary from Jim Courier and crew. Also interesting to see different players in high pressure situations.

The Federer vs. Nadal semi final match the other night was awesome, both champions, Nadal advanced. I cheer for Federer to hear his interviews  (they only speak to the winner). He blows me away how calm and collected he always is, plus honest, insightful, and humble. Hero material, if you will.

Anyway, Pretty cruisy ladies final tonight for Azarenka against Sharapova. First time Grand slam winner is always cool to see. Tennis has female superstars, that's for sure. $2,300,000 for the W, over a million for the runner up. Sigh, wish more women's sports had this kind of  prestige. They were calling this match the Scream Queen final, cause they both scream every hit of the ball. I think Azarenka is a bad ass:) She's in the zone, and it shows. Nice one.

Men's final tomorrow. #1 vs. #2. Joker vs. Nadal. So funny how OCD Nadal is with the butt pick, nose scratch, tuck , tuck , bounce bounce bounce , serve. Banana. Water bottles in their spot, Uncle Tony  in the stands. Good Characters all around.

Aussie DH National- Mt. Buller

Mt. BULLER , VICTORIA Just a quick update from todays events... Weather conditions- Hot and sunny. Track conditions- Dry, Square edge rocks, round rocks, few wooden bridges, mild slope, tight, narrow trail, lots of gum trees, and a couple fast fire road sections, about 3 1/2 min. Women's Top 3 1. Tracey Hannah 2. Jill 3. Shelly Flood

Tracey put in another solid time. She is a former World Cup DH winner, and has been training flat out for her comeback. I didn't really see her ride that much, but she will be a contender again. My run went ok. Had a lot of positive stuff come from the weekend, so I am happy, not the run I wanted in a couple spots, little detour, but all good. I have made tons of progress with my riding and fitness, and will continue to improve :) Men's top 5 1. Troy Brosnan 2. Sam Hill 3. Bryn Atkinson 4. Ricky Boyer 5. Rhys Atkinson Troy Brosnan seems to be on a bit of a roll, winning both the quali and the final here at buller. I didn't see him ride much, but from what I know of his style and how tight the track was, this place suited his style of floating through rough stuff with precision, bit of fire road pedaling too, which he nailed, such a racer head these days. He always says "My run was sick" so yeah, that's all I got for you:). Sam finish 2nd, with a  pinned run. He's looking really strong as well, but having a little ankle biter like Troy will surely motivate him to up his game a bit and have to work for it. He had a pretty good podium speech which made a few people chuckle. MTBA is Kinda unique to do podium speeches for all 5 people.

Bryn finished 3rd, which is really quite amazing for his first race on a new bike,  and after all that time recovering from the femur/ elbow injuries. Lesson to be learned about dedication to rehab!. Think he inspired a lot of people, I know I was really proud of him:)

Ricky Boyer for the 4th. Also a solid racer, consistent and fast. Think he has some go-pro footage somewhere. Sure hope so, cause he was wearing a camera mounted to the top of his helmet 24-7. Found this link to some of his older footage to show some of the race tracks here in oz. http://www.youtube.com/user/rickyboymtb/feed Big Cat- Rhys Atkinson rounded out the podium. Little bro has some serious talent on a DH bike, he is on the edge, really fast, and has incredible line selections. Think he'll have a crack at a few World Cups and surprise some people. He's now 3rd in the points battle for the series.

Our good pal Cillian finished 9th, well done! Stacked field for an aussie national. Honestly, I didn't see too much this weekend to report. I was having a lot of fun riding, and just doing my own thing. Really chilled environment, not too many fans unfortunatly. XC bandits were off completely separate doing their thing, we cooked our own food the whole time, watched tennis every spare moment,  and just kept it mellow. Not a very social experience, even though everyone loves to hang out and have a few laughs. Buller is just not really the setting for it, very isolated, only a couple places to eat maybe. The closest town is 40 minutes away in Mansfield, but the majority of people have to get home for monday workday. Look for updates on pinkbike, vital, dirt, and mtba? There were a few media guys out there. FULL RESULTS: http://www.castech.com.au/Results/real_insurance_mtba_gravity_cup_rd2.OCLAUH.htm

First bit of Schwag

Pretty fun to be able to design stuff and get it made. Round 1 of promotional gear just rocked up. Kits are next in line.

Buller Seeding

MT.BULLER, VICTORIA, AUS Just finished up the seeding runs here at Mt. Buller. Nice day, sun was out. I personally got cooked, red face and arms, but small price to pay for a sunny day in the mtns. The course here is as rocky as it gets, just finding a little flow is the trick:) I've been loving it actually. The new bikes handle amazing, so this track is a ripper for testing all kinds of speeds and impacts.

For seeding run, I am stoked that Tracy Hannah is here to race against, but unfortunately I got a flat half way down my run, so the real battle will be tomorrow. Keep em guessing. About 7 ladies, so I am the first to go, which is sweet. Tracy had a fast time, and won the quali.

In the mens, Troy Brosnan, Sam Hill, Bryn, Ricky Boyer, Rhys Atkinson. Top 5. Bryn said he was a little tight, but happy to get his first race over with after so much time out. New day tomorrow.

SEEDING RESULTS/ LIVE TIMINGwww.castech.com.au/Results

Some fast juniors here too. Australia pumps em out!. Jared Rando has taken over a little bit of coaching duties, giving these rippers some stucture. He's kinda like the new scotty, but darker:).

That's it for now. C ya tomorrow. Don't forget to also follow the Supercross from Dodger stadium. I'm calling that Bubba gets his shit together and owns it:).

aussie national- mt.buller

MT.BULLER, VICTORIABryn and I just arrived in the Australian alpine for our first race of the year on our Norco bikes. Race practice is the best training, so being down here in oz for summer, we try to capitolize on that.

Our bikes and kits are still just our offseason gear. Want to leave the flashy world cup colors and stuff for just that.

We have been putting in so much work with our new training plan, that racing will be the easy part. All healed up and ridi.g with a calm focused dynamic, bryn is back.

Ill keep you posted. Happy to be in the mix with some competition. Wish us luck!

Luke Strobel Interview

PHOTO: Frantisek Kusovsky

If you don't know who Luke Strobel is, you probably don't follow World Cup downhill, or read this blog:). He is a good pal, super mellow, says 'mega" and "hella" a lot, which is "epic":), he loves riding bikes and fishing, and is the local of all locals at home in the N-Dub.

We ride with him on a daily basis in Seattle, well Bryn does, and they wait for me :) , But Luke is a top 20 contender worldwide for downhill, and has plenty left in the tank.

He is also without a ride for next year, which is absurd. Hopefully this interview gives you a glimpse of what Luke is all about. He keeps it real.

Name?

Luke Strobel

Where do you live?

Issaquah, WA - USA

Best part about living there?

The awesome riding, the beautiful mountains,  steelhead fishing, my girl and my family.

What do you love about steelhead fishing so much?

Ever since I was a little kid I love being around rivers. Maybe fishing is just a excuse for me to be on the river. Steelhead are a beautiful fish. I really don'tknow why I love it so much. I guess you will just have to hook one and you will see what I am taking about. Its good for soul.

What are you favorite types of trails to ride?

I like ruts.

So when you see a dry rocky dusty grainy hot, non jumpy, pedally track, what happens?

I adapt. I love dry dusty tracks its all the same to me. Just lean back and smash it. I will say I have been working very very hard in the pedaling department.

Where were you at nationals? Just a world cup guy these days?

I really wanted to be there. But I just didn't have the support or the funds to go. It was a hard race for me to miss. Sad.

What's your plan for next year?

I want to race the full World Cup. I have been training and riding really hard every day to reach where I want to be.  But as of now I still don't have any support to race. Its all still completely up in the air. Looking for a ride!

Does anyone know you are looking for a new ride?

I hope so I thought I have been putting the word out. But I have nothing on the plate and it is getting late.

What are your goals?

To be in the top ten consistently and get podiums on the World Cup

What is one thing bike related you always wanted to do or go ride, but never had time cause of racing?

There is a lot of riding high up in the mountains here in the NW that I would like to do more of. But the window to do it is pretty short due to snow. Since I am gone all summer my opportunities are even less. I would also like to do some of the local Super D races they sound really fun. And show up to more of those sweet PNW races.

Non bike related that you always wanted to do?

Win the lotto

Would you ever race cyclcross?

No, i'm not that hip

I know you'd love "MEGA" avalanche, isn't that right?

The "MEGA" is defiantly one race thats on my to do list. I think I could do well at the sort of race. Long climbs and long descents are what I was raised on. I guess I need to get one of those dropper posts.

Do yo miss Bryn now that he is gone?

Of course

Who do you ride with in the winter?

All sorts of people. Mostly issaquah locals. Quite a lot of ripers around here.

How snowy and cold does it have to be before you won't ride?

Its got to be dirt, I dont ride bikes in the snow much.  The winters are generally mild here. There will be a week here and there that its snowy in the low lands. But thats when you go snowboarding. The dirt is pretty good 12 months a year here in washington. It might even be better in the winter...........Jill

What is the biggest gap you've jumped on a snowboard?

I'm more of a big mountain/backcountry guy. I havent been going up to much latley. We need snow.

Do you take a pack in the backcountry, and know survival skills?

Yes I have a pack and common sense skills

No fish to gut, what are you going to eat?

I let a lot of them go. Fish really isnt my favorite thing to eat. I do bonk a few though ; )

What is your most favorite meal?

hmmm I really injoy a good Thai meal. Noodle Boat in Issaquah is hard to beat if your ever in town.

Does your mom update facebook more than you?

Yes, she probably posts more than you Jill. She is awesome.

Why don't you post updates so she doesn't have to ask me how you are doing, even though I love to talk to her:) Hi Janet.

She wants an update ever 3 minutes. But I have a new sweet 4G phone so I can keep you and my mother in the loop 24/7.

Would you ever live in Europe full time?

Negative. I love America. Maybe short term though.

Which country is your favorite to visit then?

Probably New Zealand, its a beutiful place the riding is awesome, the food is great, and I have a lot of friends there.

That is all. Look for "Hella" facebook updates from the 4g phone:) Good luck finding a ride homie! Later. jk

Nice day in oz

Pretty much can't go wrong with a day of training, a sunset, and an emu. Off season bikes. Really love this rig. Can't wait for you to see it in action with the fresh world cup paint job and our kits:)

Crew. Darren and Joel Willis, Bender, Cillian, and bryn. Never any worries :). Blue Mountain's finest .

A1 Supercross

MX and biking go hand in hand, tons of crossover, so as you can imagine it's pretty exciting when the Supercross season starts up. 2 wheel action is amazing! They parallel our MTB industry a tad, but at like 10,000 times the scale and more cash- handlebars and wheels. Lots easier for them to run just a US circuit and have semi trucks and all the flair in the pits that goes with it. Anyway, some guy was streaming A1 over the internet live from Speed channel, and we got to watch the whole thing unfold over here in Australia. Pretty sweet. Only a matter of time before that guy gets shut down and his ass handed to him by some corporate lawyer, but we salute you!!!

Racing is so wild. Never know what is going to happen. RV had an impressive performance. Think with a few more diverse and challenging tracks there will be an awesome season of racing.

I love all the new kits, graphics, fresh bikes, etc. Pro circuit gear Thor stuff looked the best I thought. Brayton's one gear was sweet too, with the goggles accenting it. Dungey's was decent, should've gone with the black boots though:)  Nioce.

We follow these podcast shows on pulp mx and racer X, that have all kinds of interviews and analysis. Good way to commute and waste time. Steve Matthes, Ping, Weege,  and his buddies talk a lot, but you get quite a few tasty morsels of info from behind the scenes.

Speed has Ricky Carmichael and Emig as commentators too , which is amazing. Most pro sports have the best commentators, and it makes such a huge difference. Football, Tennis, NBA, etc. They offer so much insight, then have post game wrap up shows. Not just stating the obvious makes it easy to be a fan and learn things by following along. Love hearing interviews from the top people, again, many parallels to any sport.

In MX, most of the guys say the same thing over and over, but RV has been the star with insight as well as winning races. Woo.

Stewart is gonna rally back, but has some work to do.Love it. Next week, they go to Pheonix. Trey Canard might spice it up. Overall, real exciting to watch. Later.

Norco

The announcement just went out about our new team. http://www.vitalmtb.com/news

This has been a fun project getting everything together for a team again. We had most of the pieces in place, with co sponsors and the structure, so with a little hustle we found a new partner in Norco bicycles. We are a separate team to the Dirt Norco boys, but we owe them a lot for helping develop such a rad bike. Norco is fairly close to home- only a couple hrs away in Vancouver BC. Really nice people , and the 2012 line up of bikes are incredible, check em out.

Back in October Bryn and I set up a little home office, had meetings at the bike show,  product orders, testing, invoicing, logistics, etc. ANd we are going to win a bunch of races, which is the priority!! Mom is on it for Accounting, plus shipping and receiving:) Family effort while we are over here in oz.

A little time management around training, and boom, that's it. Haha Kinda.

Its easier to show up and have everything handed to you sometimes, but that only last so long, and creating a job is a much more rewarding task. Gets things done to a certain standard. Just have to select a mechanic, photographer, figure out a european set up, and maybe look for a road manager. Dunno yet. Coming together though....

Just know this. Our kits are looking pretty rad, and we will be dialed:)

Thanks to everyone: Red Bull, Norco, Crankbrothers, Fox Shox, Shimano, Renthal, Maxxis, Lezyne, 5.10, e*13, dakine, Oakley, fi:z'ik, Cane creek, Alpine stars, TLD, Esoles.

Team News

Our Team news is dropping in the next couple days. Pretty pumped. Nothing better than fresh bikes to bring in the new year!!

Merry X-Mas

WENTWORTH FALLS, NSW, AUSChristmas comes a day early in Australia! First real day sunshine since I've been back too, which is nice:) We started a tradition last year having a Holiday party at our house here in the Blue mountains. Starts with a Xmas ride or hike, followed by a little food, some beverages, swimming in the lake, then moto and more bike riding the next couple days, etc. This is our first full week off of training in awhile, so I think it's a free for all.

Bryn's mom and brother come up, plus a bunch of our good friends all kick it for holiday festivities. Real casual, just how I like it. Christmas in Australia is a different experience, it's summer time, so Santa is slightly overdressed, but it's all good. Have a happy holiday wherever you're at:)

Australian happenings

Wentworth Falls, NSW Pretty nie to be back in Australia. Really peaceful where we live in the Blue mountains. Lots of space and epic scenery. We are surrounded by national parks and world heritage areas, so not bad. Still a bit cold, but I'm sure I'll be back to dealing with the heat in no time. Loving the long full days of summer once again.

Happy to see all our pals. We have a crew that we see nearly every day. BBq, hanging out, bike riding, moto days, etc:) pretty fun. I tried out a 250f for the first time ever, and had a good time. Was pretty nervous about the size and weight, but decided to finally trade in the little Honda 150r for some bigger wheels and proper sizing . Suspension is getting done this week:) Our new trainer has a MX background, so I've been getting all the hot tips with fundamental control. Will maintain my stand as a trail adventurer though:)  Love missions.

Check out this breakfast spot right down the road. Hell of a view. Out the door are our running trails that go down to the waterfalls and canyons. Conservation Hut

Old Holden FC car. Australian Made

Our homie- Cillian Kennedy @ the job site. His bro Lockey owns- Kennedy Construction- Locky and his pup Rocky not pictured

Day 1 on a 250f .

Bryn getting after it. back up to speed:)

BMX track down in Lawson finally got a rebuild. Super sweet technical layout:) We just had a look, not finished yet.

No more Transition:(

Press release about the changes to Transition's Factory squad. http://www.vitalmtb.com/news/news/Jill-Kintner-and-Bryn-Atkinson-Part-Ways-with-Transition-Bikes,399

I was sad to hear the news myself, as we had a great relationship with Transition, and a lot of success. 3 National Titles, 2 Pro GRT Overall titles, Undefeated in Slalom, US Open victories, and 9th my first year of World Cup DH after missing the first round.

When one door closes, another one opens. We are grateful for the support of Transition and our co sponsors over the last two years, and thank you to all of our friends and fans locally and beyond.

Adios.

Been a crazy couple of days getting things done to leave for 4 months. Check and check. Can't wait to unleash some news about our program for next year. Been running double duty with training and business:) Really enjoying it though, things are clicking into place. Catch you on the flip side. Oz awaits...

Pure bar

Little hot tip for all you bar connoisseurs. Pure bar is one of my favorite snacks; fully organic, delicious, healthy. I have only seen em at trader Joes, so if you get the chance - scope them out. Rad company. http://thepurebar.com/pure-products/

Countdown- 4

SEATTLE, WA The countdown till departure- 4 days left in Seattle. Permafrost has reared it's ugly head, and so it's time to roll out to sunny OZ. The trails in Washington are sooo good, gonna be tough to leave, but man, it is getting colder and colder up in this piece. freezing rain is the opposite of enjoyable.

Endless summer is not something I take for granted, but to be fair, Bryn only really gets 4 months home a year in oz, to my 8 months here in the USA:)

Think Bon Jovi said it best, " It's now or never, I ain't gonna live forever"  . gotta live your dream while you can. Hope this blog, and my endless wisdom has inspired you.

This is my year -2012. It's on.

Skills day in Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD, BC Just wanted to say Thanks again to everyone who made our skills day a success at the Abbotsford indoor BMX!!! - Track organizers; Steve and Gary, Kat from Sweetlines (who is great to coach with), our helpers, and the ladies who attended. We had so many people wait-listed, that we ended up adding an extra class earlier in the day. Almost 30 ladies in one day, not too shabby:) Great groups too.

Think BMX tracks are perfect place just to really break down basic skills, and then add in more advanced stuff as the group progresses- like passing tactics, starts, manuals, etc. Then at the end get a few full gates of ladies battling it out!!

The building up there is pretty dialed; Heat, lights, sound system, restrooms, huge space for a track, grandstands, etc. Much bigger than our Port orchard indoor spot, but Port orchard has a little tighter turns and sections for technical skills.

Abbotsford also has an outdoor supercross track with a full sized SX ramp and sick rhythm sections just walking distance away from the indoor. They are going to have a World Cup Supercross next year. It was wet and locked up, but we got to check it out. That's more my style of riding. I have a hard time staying entertained on basic bmx tracks these days, but really enjoy creative lines at new locations:) Had a great time sharing my riding knowledge, helping people out, and meeting new lady shredders!!!

Guess they are going to tear this current indoor track down and rebuild it in january for more indoor racing excitement, so that'll keep em coming back!! The potential for this space is unlimited.

Kat and I will do more clinics in the future- Thinking about doing pump track ones next fall probably:) That will be real fun. I taught Pump tracks last year at Dirt Series:) I'll be back with those gals at Dirt Series again too - great program. C ya there-

Jill..

Women's skills clinic- Canada

Going to do an all women's skills day at the Abbotsford indoor BMX facility on Saturday- December 3rd. Get signed up quick if you want some instruction from Kat Sweet and I. Not far from Bellingham or Vancouver if you live near those places.
